What is Criterias Best Choose for Medical Syringe Pumps

What is the use of syringe pump?
A syringe driver or syringe pump is a small infusion pump (some include infuse and withdraw capability), used to gradually administer small amounts of fluid (with or without medication) to a patient or for use in chemical and biomedical research.

What is an infusion in medical terms?
Infusion therapy involves the administration of medication through a needle or catheter. It is prescribed when a patient's condition is so severe that it cannot be treated effectively by oral medications.

Syringe pump is designed to deliver drug at a predetermined rate and speed. In recent years, pharmaceutical companies have developed more and more concentrated and effective medicine. Hence, these medicines are required to be injected very slowly as well as continuously. Syringe pumps are particularly helpful under such circumstances as they are programmed to do deliver drug through the vein at a determined rate.

Syringe pump generally consist of a drum that is attached to a piston. The piston is operated by a motor through a drive screw or worm gear which helps in pushing the plunger of syringe in or out resulting in a smooth flow. The syringe is engaged on a clamp on the frame and the plunger of the syringe is displaced by movement of drum. Most of the syringe pump can work with different syringes of different diameters, but the diameter has to be entered in beginning to make sure correct volume is dispensed. These guidelines should be read from manufacturer guidelines, and made sure whether syringes with different diameter can be used. The user can set the parameters such as flow rate, dispense volume and syringe diameter.

Syringe pumps can deliver drugs even in very small doses, 0.1 ml per hour to 200 ml per hour. The accuracy is mentioned by the manufacturer in their user manual and will ideally be mentioned in terms of flow rate i.e. over the entire time of delivering the drug, the variation won’t be more than the prescribed limit. These pumps have a smooth delivery over the entire period.

Some syringe pump's accuracy might appear in terms of displacement of piston. These pumps will deliver the determined dose over the time, but the rate of flow might not be smooth. More than one syringe pump is also used if there is a need to deliver more than one drug at same time.

How accurate are your pumps?
Much better than 1% of dispense rate and volume. Please contact us to have our engineers determine whether the equipment will meet the level of accuracy that you require. We would be happy to assist you.

What kind of flow rates can your pumps handle?
We have more pump models and options then listed on our web site. Please contact us to determine a pump model that will meet your specifications. Flow rates vary with syringe size and/or tubing. Pressure and viscosity also determine proper pump selection. The following are example flow rates for a sample of syringes with the model NE-1000 single syringe pump. Higher flow rates are available.

Syringe  Size              Maximum Rate                       Minimum Rate
0.5 µL                        25.49 µL/hr                               0.001 µL/hr
1 mL                               53.09 mL/hr                                0.73 µL/hr
3 mL                               192.5 mL/hr                              2.646 µL/hr
5 mL                               406.1 mL/hr                              5.581 µL/hr
10 mL                         600 mL/hr                              8.244 µL/hr
20 mL                       975.8 mL/hr                              13.41 µL/hr
30 mL                        1282 mL/hr                              17.63 µL/hr
60 mL                        2120 mL/hr                              29.13 µL/hr

Are your pumps compatible with electrospinning?

Syringe pumps are in use throughout the world for electrospinning applications. Our research papers webpage list some of the universities that have used our syringe pumps with electrospinning applications. Please also be aware that special precautions are necessary with electrospinning such as using a cage to protect the pump from sparks and using a linear power supply. We offer a special pump power supply for use with electrospinning. Contact us to discuss your application.

Are your pumps compatible with our software?
The pumps can communicate with any software that is compatible with serial communications. If the computer does not have a RS-232 serial port, we offer a USB to RS-232 converter.

The pumps are compatible . There is no special driver necessary. We do have example programs available.

We also offer free terminal emulator software.

Will the syringe or peristaltic pump work with my viscous liquid?
Syringe Pumps: Rule of thumb is if you can push or pull the syringe with your hand, then we have a pump that can push or pull the syringe. To reduce viscosity, you can utilize our Syringe Heater Kit. Warming up the fluid may reduce the viscosity.
Peristaltic Pumps: Rule of thumb is if the liquid freely flows by itself, the peristaltic pump can move your liquid.
